Shubert Cherry Tree Seeds

(Prunus virginiana Schubert)

Prunus virginiana 'Schubert', also known as Schubert Cherry, is a cultivar of the native North American tree Black Chokecherry. It is known for its striking foliage that changes color throughout the growing season.

Description

  • Foliage: The leaves start out green in the spring and turn a deep reddish-purple by mid-summer.
  • Flowers: White, fragrant flowers bloom in spring.
  • Fruit: Small, dark red to black cherries that are attractive to wildlife.
  • Height and Spread: Typically grows to about 20-30 feet tall and 15-20 feet wide.

Planting Instructions:

Stratification: Seed requires 30-60 days warm stratification followed by 90-120 cold stratification.

Planting Site: Choose a planting site with well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade.

Soil Preparation: Prepare the soil by loosening it and adding organic matter if necessary to improve soil fertility and drainage.

Sowing Seeds: Sow the seeds shallowly in the soil, covering them lightly.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly to ensure the soil stays damp.

Germination: Be patient, as germination can take some time. Keep the area weed-free to reduce competition for nutrients and water.

Transplanting: Once seedlings are strong enough, they can be transplanted to their permanent location. Ensure they are planted at the same depth they were growing at before.

Maintenance: Water the young trees regularly, especially during dry periods. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Protection: Protect young seedlings from pests and diseases. Consider using netting to prevent birds from eating the seeds and seedlings.

Zones: 2 to 7

Stratification Requirement: Seed requires 30-60 days warm stratification followed by 90-120 cold stratification.
